The Great Basin Institute is a 501(c)3 nonprofit that serves as the interpretative association for the USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit. Since 2018, GBI has cooperatively managed the Taylor Creek Visitor Center, providing interpretive programs, retail sales and staff support to the site. In 2022, the partnership expanded to include co-management of the Tallac Historic Site. Together, GBI and the Forest Service provide visitor services, educational programs, interpretive events and stewardship activities across the Taylor-Tallac landscape. The USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit was established in 1973 to improve land management throughout the Lake Tahoe watershed. Today, the Forest Service owns and manages approximately 75% of land within the Tahoe Basin for public recreation purposes.
